Combating the Latest Security Threat: Lock Bumping.
Just about anyone can bump-open a lock anytime, anywhere. It‘s a growing problem that jeopardizes your company‘s security, as well as people and property throughout your facility — even more so in remote or less frequented areas where these “break-ins” which leave no indication of forced entry, could remain undetected for some time.
Many lock manufacturers offer solutions in varying degrees, which further prompted ASTM International to develop new testing criteria under its Standard F883-09 for determining a lock cylinder‘s ability to effectively resist break-ins using lock bumping techniques.
The revised Standard has been used to test and compare pin tumbler locks commonly used in padlocks and door hardware. It establishes six grade levels of bump resistance, Grade 1 providing the least and Grade 6, the most.
Locks from just two manufacturers met Grade 6 ASTM Standards, and only those with BumpStop technology from Master Lock and American Lock exceeded Grade 6 requirements.
